I've been surprised at how many new small business owners and entrepreneurs have paid SEO and social media experts who over promised and never delivered.

It's hard for a new business owner to tell what's real and what's hype without an experienced, trusted advisor on their team.

Orwell wrote that "To see what is in front of one's nose needs a constant struggle."

As a marketer and publicist I've always felt that part of my role was to help my clients see things for what they are and communicate appropriately.

Hype marketing 'works' but only for so long. Expectations don't get met, products or systems fail and everyone goes back to the drawing board.

Unfortunately people often draw the wrong lessons: 'we need more hype!'

No, you need to sell who/what you are, not who/what you want people to think you are.

And another thing, if you rely on a customer base that doesn't understand your true value . . . you've got problems.
